Aston Martin has confirmed that Lance Stroll will be absent from the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix due to a medical issue. The Canadian driver is scheduled to undergo a minor surgical procedure after struggling with persistent discomfort in his hand and wrist over recent weeks.
Following his participation in the qualifying session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya—where he secured the 14th position—Aston Martin announced that Stroll would be sidelined for the remainder of the race weekend.
His condition had apparently worsened, prompting medical professionals to intervene. The team released a statement explaining that Stroll has been experiencing pain believed to be linked to a surgery he had in 2023.
Medical specialists have recommended further treatment, resulting in the decision for him to withdraw from Sunday’s race to focus on recovery.
Stroll had previously suffered injuries—including fractures and a broken toe—during a pre-season cycling crash last year, which necessitated surgery and rehabilitation. Despite the setback, he managed a swift return to the track for the season opener in Bahrain, where he impressed by finishing in sixth place.
That return was particularly remarkable given that, at the time, doctors were unsure whether he would be fit enough to compete. His determination saw him defy expectations, though he later admitted the experience had prompted changes in how he trains and manages his physical condition. In preparation for the current season, Stroll revealed that he had modified his training methods to avoid reliving his 2023 challenges.
This approach was aimed at ensuring long-term fitness and minimizing the risk of aggravating old injuries. Now in his seventh season with Aston Martin—having joined when the team operated under the Racing Point name—Stroll has collected 14 points so far in the 2025 campaign, placing him 11th in the drivers’ standings.
His absence will be a blow to the team as they aim to climb from eighth in the constructors’ championship.Meanwhile, veteran teammate Fernando Alonso is still hunting for his first points of the season and will start the Spanish Grand Prix from 10th place on the grid. With Stroll out of contention, all eyes will be on Alonso to deliver for the team in front of the Spanish crowd.
